tech: how to stop Windows 10 from auto updating

Lat night, when I shut down my laptop, Windows 10 did an automatic update. Then this morning, when I was about to make an important presentation, as soon as I started the laptop, Windows 10 launched an endless updating process. How do I keep this from happening?
